The Reserves squad opened the season for 2022 with a hard fought 2-1 loss. They went down in the first half from a well worked direct goal from a corner. The second half saw Brandon Park then scored again about 15 minutes into the second half to take a 2-0 lead. With about 5 minutes to go, captain Tervel Atanasov scored from a scramble and brought it back to 2-1, which the match finished at.
It was now over to the Seniors and the game did not disappoint! The game took a few minutes to settle in to, but then the moment we were all waiting for happened… The lads got a counter attack after winning the ball in midfield, ball was played to Rayden Jones, who beat his man, came 1v1 with the keeper and put it into the corner for his maiden Senior competitive goal for Monbulk. The score at the break was 1-0.
After a few words of encouragement from the gaffer, the boys came out after half time ready to play and again, the boys caught the opposition on the break, and a ball was played square across the box, the initial shot was saved and then Liam Zwagerman popped up to slide it home to score his maiden Senior competitive goal for Monbulk and made the scoreline 2-0!!!
After a red card was shown to one of the opposition players, that seemed to kick them into gear and with 10 minutes to play, they scored from a corner to bring it back to 2-1. Their comeback was sadly completed when with 3 minutes to go, they scored again after our keeper made a top save, the rebound fell to their forward and he slid the ball across the 6 yard box for a tap in and 2-2 scoreline.
Lots of positives to take out from both games as our young squads can only learn from the experiences. Thank you to Brandon Park Football Club for coming down and giving us 2 great matches, we wish them the best of luck for the rest of the season. Also, thank you to those people who came down and threw their support behind our lads, it was a great atmosphere and hope to see you all down at Egan Lee Reserve next week as our boys take on Knox City Football Club!
